The clients had two potentially competing desires for this remodel: One was to open up their single-story 1922 bungalow to more natural light and garden views. The other was to find room for a master-bedroom suite. Rather than expanding up or out, the private master suite was carved out of a previously underused basement. Large windows set in wells flood the new bedroom and bath with natural light. A spare palette of materials—including glass panels, back-painted glass tiles, fir trim, and concrete floors with radiant heat—contribute to the tranquil character of the space. On the first floor, an ipe deck, a window-lined staircase, and newly vaulted ceilings soften the divide between interior spaces and the surrounding yard.
